It’s been a prolific fruit harvest this year after a warm, sunny spring, promoting strong pollination. We’ve been juicing the apples in separate variety batches this year as they become ripe… Discovery, Spartan, James Grieve so far. Many thanks to Noah, Angelica and Kairi for their help with this fun and very tasty work!
Some of our newest residents have settled well into their studio work, exploring the landscape and its offerings of natural materials. They have been experimenting with nettles, algae and wool.
As the season turns we are thinking ahead to the preparations for the fruits of next year.
In the orchard and veg garden there’ll be continuation of harvest, pruning, clearing, and prepping beds for next year. Then we will get to the Autumn bulb planting. Winter is a time for tending to the thousands of young trees we’ve planted, enriching the soil generally – so heavy lugging of mulching materials to all corners of the estate. Clearing, protecting, replanting- rebalancing the diversity of species. In winter it often feels like the sense of urgency decreases – we aren’t running round harvesting – although it is also when the physically heavy work begins.
